Physical Education and Health

Physical Education
at
Perran-ar-Worthal.

“Outstanding PE and school sport at Perran-ar-Worthal Primary School will empower all children to become Physically Literate, enabling every child to have the physical skills, confidence, motivation, knowledge and understanding to ensure they have a positive relationship with movement, find meaning in movement and therefore be more likely to remain physical activity throughout their lives.”

Physical activity at Perran-ar-Worthal offers a wide selection of traditional sports as well as some slightly alternative sports too. Children develop a wide variety of skills in order to play games during their PE lessons based on the progression of learning from Complete PE; this begins in the foundation stage with using games to consolidate fundamental movement skills and developing these throughout KS1.

Children of all confidence levels feel successful throughout PE sessions. In order to build their confidence in competing against other schools, we work closely with the Penryn partnership which offers a wide range of competitive and non-competitive sporting opportunities. Children have access to many after school sporting clubs such as cross country, football with Plymouth Argyle, girl's football, netball, hockey and basketball.

Playtimes include a termly timetable of games that children can choose from. We believe it is vital for children to be empowered with the knowledge to look after not only their physical health but also their mental well-being and their nutritional understanding. As a result, all children in KS2 have brief learning sessions prior to their PE lessons, to enhance their understanding in these areas.

Children have the opportunity to contribute their ideas and suggestions on improving Perran-ar-Worthal's  PE offer during their Pupil Voice sessions.

My Health Matters.

As a  part of Physical Education at Perran-ar-Worthal, children learn about fitness components to empower them to look after all aspects of their physical health.

They learn about nutritional health, strengthening their understanding of the importance of making healthy choices for our bodies. Children are also taught how to monitor their mental well-being and are given a toolkit of strategies to use if they feel they are struggling.

 Celebrating children's sporting achievements.

As a part of the Penryn sport's partnership, children at Perran-ar-Worthal are offered many opportunities over their years here to compete in a variety of sporting events. These opportunities increase incrementally over every child's journey throughout their school years and challenge our children at different levels, enabling them to increase their confidence of competitions whilst proudly representing the school. These include netball and football leagues, basketball and hockey leagues, a T1 rugby league and a cricket league.

All competition levels are catered for as events with more of a focus on participation through the Cornwall School Games are Interspersed throughout the year.
KS2 children are given the opportunity to compete in swimming galas, basketball events, gymnastics tournaments and tennis matches. KS1 children have the opportunity to represent the school by challenging their fundamental movement skills in a variety of fun balancing, throwing, jumping and movement activities. The experience of representing the school at these events increases children's confidence and love of sport and helps prepare them for engagement in sport for their future. Our newsletters celebrate their amazing skills and attitudes. We hope you enjoy them.
